Sony has announced which smartphones will be updated to Android 9 Pie, explaining the complex procedure required to get the final version.
Google has just announced the final version of Android 9 Pie, already available for its Pixel and Essential smartphones. Sony has announced which Xperia models will receive the update, also explaining the complex procedure required before distribution.
The first smartphones to receive the new operating system will be those that adopt the stock version, so without customization and app proprietary, like the recent Nokia models. Sony instead must first make various changes to Android 9 Pie and perform various quality tests. After obtaining the PDK (Platform Development Kit) from Google, the manufacturer begins to create different versions based on the hardware of the devices and then activates the basic features, such as calls, messages and Internet connectivity.
We then proceed to the "Sony-fication", or the addition of the custom interface and the app proprietary (Contacts, Album, Music, Video, Camera, Smart Stamina and others). This version of Android is tested by Sony employees and selected customers. The feedback received will be used to correct any problems.
The next step is to verify compliance with the standards (for example, Bluetooth and WiFi) that will lead to certification by the authorities in charge. The changes requested by the telephone operators are also made, followed by another test phase. At this point the update is ready for distribution. The Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Premium, XZ2 Compact, XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will receive Android 9 Pie from November. Who owns the Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus will have to wait until the beginning of 2019.
