Google Cloud strengthens its position in the segment of infrastructure for multiplayer games, thanks to a partnership with the startup English Improbable. Its flagship product is SpatialOS, a platform that allows developers to create complex game worlds, persistent and very large in size.
Distribute this software on the Google Cloud Platform provides several key performance benefits over hosting solutions used so far, such as dedicated servers or even individual PCs. The number of players able to populate the world is growing exponentially, and also grow the potential for interaction with the environment. Thanks to the scalable, distributed cloud platform, the system uses all the resources they need, and can get to manage hundreds of thousands of players simultaneously.
SpatialOS will allow developers to substantially speed up the realization of their ideas, and will guarantee the independent studios more chance to compete with large companies. The first SpatialOS beta will be available in the first quarter of 2017, although more interested developers will have access preview thanks to an Open Alpha Program. Also interesting is the announcement of SpatialOS Games Innovation Program, a kind of "scholarship" / funding for the most interesting projects. More details on the dedicated website of Improbable.
Adrift Worlds is one of the first games announced to make use of SpatialOS. It is a MMORPG set in a world made up of many islands suspended in mid-air, which at the time already cover an area of over 1000 square kilometers. Players will decide which career to take - explorers, warriors, pirates, merchants - form alliances and of course fighting.
