Among the most popular media players in the world available in a multi-platform, Plex is undoubtedly among the first. It is widely used by those who are used to buy movies in the Blu-Ray format, and then convert them into .mkv files to watch comfortably on the PC without the need of having to use the optical disc. In the past few hours it was announced Plex Cloud, a new service that allows you to expand even more the media player ecosystem.
Normally Plex works by installing a server in your PC or NAS and making him handle all the multimedia playback and trans-coding of the files contained within it to the client (smartphone, other PC, Smart TV, tablet etc.). . With Plex Cloud remains completely unchanged except for file source: instead of being saved locally, the files are located on Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox (the services currently supported).
Plex Cloud is not suitable for everyone
This means that in order to use Plex Cloud you have to have the entire library of media already loaded on one of the services mentioned before (probably the free space provided by the services there will not be enough). Clearly in this way the media playback is completely based on the Internet connection, resulting in adaptation of the trans-coding based on available bandwidth. For those who are on an internet connection in optical fiber, it is undoubtedly a great service.
